With the world becoming more digitized every day, it comes as no surprise that technical support jobs are now constantly popping up everywhere. 

There are definitely work opportunities, but unless you have a well-written resume to send in with your application – you run the risk of getting overlooked.

A technical support resume needs to show a hiring manager that you are the right person for the job, and in this guide you will find all the information you need (along with a complete sample resume) to boost your own technical support resume. 

Resume objective for technical support

The smartest thing to do when you apply for a technical support job, is to show the employer that you are the right person for the job. The resume objective is an opportunity to catch a hiring manager’s interest.

When you apply for a technical support job, read through the job description to determine what the company is looking for in an employee. Do they want someone responsible, with computer knowledge and years of experience?

Pick out the qualities and experiences that apply to you and use it when writing your objective. This presents the hiring manager with necessary knowledge already when picking up your resume.

In our research, we sampled 15 job posts to get a better idea of what companies look for in a technical support agent, and many of the personality traits mentioned could easily be highlighted in a resume objective.

Among the 17 resumes surveyed we also noticed a clear preference for including a resume objective, which is why we feel confident in our recommendation to include one in a technical support resume.

According to the U.S. Bureu of Labor Statistics, an 8% increase in job opportunities is expected, which is an above average job growth. With this in mind, now is an excellent time to write a technical support resume.

Resume skills for technical support jobs

Technical skills tend to be desired in any job, and especially as the world is becoming increasingly digitized. The American InterContinental University highlights basic skills like problem-solving, communicational skills, being a good writer, Word-, Excel- and Office knowledge and planning skills.

Also, you need people skills, as technical support is very closely related to regular customer service.  In the resumes we sampled in our research, we noticed a strong preference for hard skills like specific computer program proficiency, language skills and technology related degrees.

We also had a look at 17 different job posts for a technical support agent, and a skill that kept being brought up was the ability to multitask. A technical support worker needs to be able to do several things at once.

When you write your skill section, include skills related to customer service, mixed with information about your experience and specific technical skills.

Technical support work experience

The technical support work experience section is easy to fill out. Most entry-level jobs do not require previous work experience, but experience in customer service and tech areas are always an advantage.

A hiring manager is likely to want to know how well you can handle customers, resolve issues and receive complaints, and by showing that you have worked in a similar environment – this could be very reassuring.

Technical skills can be learned, and jobs like this usually come with some form of training or manual. However, customer service skills you tend to either have or you don’t, so use this section to highlight any related experience.

Related experience can be having worked in a store, in customer service or anything else where you have to have contact with real people.

As pointed out by Indeed, technical support work also involves a lot of technology, so any jobs related to computers and software are also excellent for listing on a technical support resume.

Technical support education

Working in technical support does not tend to require a higher education, but when we surveyed job posts, we saw several companies showing a preference for someone with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.

That said, you can always list your High School diploma or GED, and compensate in other sections of your resume if you lack a college- or university degree. 

We compared our findings to the resumes also sampled for this article, and the majority only listed High School diplomas. Our conclusion is that a higher degree is often desired, but not required.

BMC Blogs highlight something important – working in technical support and customer service are very similar, but not always the exact same. A job as a technical support agent tends to require more knowledge and hard skills, but not necessarily a higher education. 

A degree in marketing, business, sales or software would, of course, look fantastic on your resume, and could help elevate your application so that a hiring manager will pick you over other applicants.

Courses

A great way to boost a technical support resume is by taking a few courses on your free time. Many courses are available online and held at a low cost (or even free), and it is an investment that could land you with additional work opportunities as a technical support agent.

Few of our sampled resumes included courses, but we believe it could be a great way to boost a resume if you lack work experience. It is also an excellent opportunity to gain additional confidence for a future role in technical support.

In addition, none of the job posts we sampled requested specific courses. However, many asked for experience, and having taken a course could potentially supplement when you feel your work experience section is a little thin. 

List courses related to IT, software, specific computer programs like Word, customer service, administration and business.

Certifications

You don’t necessarily need certifications to work in technical support, unless your employer specifically requests it. There are no general rules or laws forcing you to be certified, but having certifications could also make you a more attractive candidate for the job.

If you want to include a certification – make sure it is relevant for the position. Any additional certificates will only take up extra space, and it might make the hiring manager feel like you didn’t read through the job post properly. 

When listing certificates on a technical support resume, less tends to be more, as you want it to look believable, relevant and job specific.

There are a few courses that lead to certification, which could all be listed here. In our research, we didn’t see any specific certification requirements in the sampled job posts, but it could still impress a hiring manager enough to score you an interview.

Using information provided in a job post is key when writing any resume, as it will tell you exactly what the company is looking for.

If we start by looking at the job description up top, we can see that this company is looking for someone who is a problem solver, someone with a passion for technology and who is eager to learn. 

The qualification section at the bottom once again highlights the importance of needing a problem-solver, and it also states that they are looking for someone who can multitask, is detail-oriented, committed to personal growth and who is responsible. 

A degree is preferred, along with relevant work experience.
