In our research, we sampled 15 store manager resumes, where the majority included a resume objective or a professional summary – leading us to the conclusion that this is something worth including in a store manager resume.
Use adjectives to show how responsible and driven you are and mix it with relevant experience and career goals. The objective is your chance to sell yourself – think of it as advertisement, or the trailer for a movie, where the goal is to catch the viewer’s (or in this case, reader’s) interest.

Resume skills for store manager
With all the responsibilities that come with being a store manager, it comes as no surprise that the hiring process tends to be extremely selective and meticulous. Unless you have the right person managing your store – things could easily go downhill very fast.
To successfully work as a store manager, you need to be so much more than just a regular employee. You need to know how to manage not only a team, but everything that goes on in the store, including deliveries, inventory and maintenance – you need organizational skills.
You also need to know how to place orders, negotiate with vendors, close deals and motivate your workers to do their absolute best, and the skill section of your resume is your chance to show the hiring manager what you can do and why they should hire you.

Store manager work experience
The type of work experience an employer will likely look for depends on the store you aspire to work in, but there is some general store manager experience that is always a good idea to add! Let’s dive right in.
Your goal when writing the work experience section is to highlight skills obtained on past job positions, that could be useful if getting the job you are currently pursuing.
Ask yourself – what have you done in the past that would convince a hiring manager that you have what it takes to manage a store?
Retail experience was often mentioned in the job posts we sampled, and while some stores seemed to ask only for relevant educational background, someone with experience is statistically more likely to be hired than someone without.
Another thing to take into consideration is the salary. If you have work experience, you might be eligible for higher pay than someone without.
As shown by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, the salaries for store managers vary greatly depending on the type of store, but work experience definitely helps when trying to secure a good wage.
Focus on management experience or leadership related experience, and if you feel you don’t have enough – any retail experience or experience related to the product/products your store would be selling.

Store manager education
When you work in retail, experience often weighs heavier than education, and as Study.com points out – a store manager position doesn’t tend to require more than a High School Diploma, even though some employers prefer candidates with a Bachelor’s degree.
We wanted to verify this and set out to sample store manager job posts from all over the country. What we found was that a large number of positions do express a wish for a Bachelor’s degree or higher, but that the lack of a degree can be compensated with relevant experience.
There were few to no mentionings of a preferred major in the sampled job ads, though, which indicates that any college or university degree is great to have when applying for a position as a store manager.
A business, marketing or management degree could potentially give you an advantage if there are other applicants, but the key conclusion drawn during our research was the benefit of having a (any) college or university degree.

Among the store manager resumes we sampled, only 2 out of 15 included a course section, but it can be a great idea to list a course or two if you want to boost your resume.
Avoid listing courses that are completely unrelated to your future role as a store manager, and focus on courses that highlight your leadership skills, manager knowledge or retail experience.
Depending on what type of store you are applying to manage, there could be other relevant courses as well. You should always take the actual workplace into consideration when putting together your resume, and this includes the course section.

In general, there are no required certificates you need in order to be a store manager. That said, having certification relevant for your future job could certainly be what catches the hiring manager’s eye.
Just like with the course we discussed above, your resume could benefit from including a business-related certificate, retail management certification, and certification related to marketing.
Few of our sampled resumes included certificates, and even fewer sampled job posts requested their future store manager to be certified, but if you have a relevant certificate – list it!
