The U.S. Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy has developed a career map for quality engineers, including health and safety engineers. In it, they specify the skills that are required for the job.
Because they have to ensure that products are being manufactured, installed, and operated to the required specifications, quality engineers need to pay attention to detail.
They review established processes to determine manufacturing and cost optimizations, which means that they need critical thinking, the power of analysis, and problem-solving skills. Problems often arise, and they need to find the cause and implement preventative and/or corrective action plans.
Quality engineers must be able to communicate verbally and in writing. For instance, they need to detail inspections and process improvements clearly, so that the rest of the team knows exactly what is going on, and what they are required to do.

Generally, quality engineers get jobs working with developers, project managers, manufacturers, varied business owners, and other engineers who have quality assurance and quality control teams.

Quality engineer education
The basic level of education and training for quality engineers is a bachelor’s degree in engineering – plus training and professional certification, which also requires training and learning.
We sampled scores of job postings and realized that the preferred level of education is a master’s degree. However, many employers are happy if the engineer has loads of experience and advanced certification.
Ultimately, as Indeed points out, a successful quality engineer will have a combination of education, training, and experience that has resulted in the required advanced skills for the job.
Some entry-level positions will accept an engineer with an associate’s degree. But generally, employers tend to prefer applicants with bachelor’s degrees in industrial, mechanical, or quality-specific engineering.
Senior quality engineer positions, including many management roles, call for people with a master’s degree in quality assurance.
That said, many quality engineers receive the bulk of their training on the job. Some do internships while they are studying, which helps them gain practical experience and makes them more employable.
Valuable on-the-job training includes instruction on procedures and processes specific to employers’ needs as well as specialized software and other computer programs.

Entry-level positions for quality engineers do not require licensure, however, a Professional Engineering (PE) license will lead to better jobs in the long run.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), once an engineer has a degree, he or she needs a passing score on the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam and get at least four years of experience. Only then can they take the PE exam.
There are several professional certifications that quality or health and safety engineers can earn including those offered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, namely the Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), and the new Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certifications.
The American Board of Industrial Hygiene offers the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and the American Society of Safety Professionals offers a Certificate in Safety Management (CSM).
The International Council on Systems Engineering has a program that leads to becoming a Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP).
The American Society for Quality (ASQ) offers Certified Quality Engineer certification to candidates who have worked in full-time, paid jobs for specified times.
