Writing part-time job resumes isn’t necessarily different than writing regular resumes, but when you are looking for a temporary job or one that only involves working a day or two a week – it becomes more important to show why you want the job, and that you want it for more than just money.

This guide is going to show you how to write a compelling resume that transpires both passion, experience and a relevant skill set, regardless of what part-time job you are putting together an application for.

Resume objective for part-time jobs

The first question you want to ask yourself is the following: Should you include a resume objective in your part-time job resume? We sampled 15 resumes for part-time positions to see what the norm was, and found that the majority did begin their resume with an objective or professional summary.

When you are applying for a part-time job, it could easily end up looking like you are only interested because of the money, and hiring managers tend to look for someone who wants to be there.

Use the resume objective to show your motivation to be hired; summarize all your most relevant skills, experience and your professional goals.

Exactly what you should include in your resume depends entirely on the job you are applying for, but one thing to keep in mind is to just to make sure it comes across that you’ve tailored your resume for that specific position.

You don’t want it to seem like you are sending around the same resume to everyone.

According to Indeed.com, making sure the employer or hiring manager knows why you want the job is key, by explaining it in a self-promotional manner.

Responsible and hard-working professional with retail experience and the desire to become a valuable part of a team. Organized, detail-oriented, driven, friendly and outgoing, and currently enrolled in 4-year business degree program with expected graduation in 2022.

Resume skills for part-time jobs

The skills to list depend entirely on the job you want. Start by considering what skills would be relevant for a certain job, such as if you are looking to be hired as a store worked or a telephone sales agent, and pick out the ones you feel apply to you.

In our research, we sampled multiple job posts and resumes for a variety of career and work fields, and we found that the skill section should always be highly customized for the specific job you want. 

Of course, there are generic skills that are always good to have, such as being responsible, organized, detail-oriented and driven, and to have language skills and be a people-person. 

Flexibility is also something you need as a part-time worker, as part-time work can often mean sudden schedule changes and the need to juggle several different activities.

Sources like Career Addict point out how a part-time job is great for gaining skills and work experience, but you also need skills in order to get a part-time job. Our recommendation is to read through the job post properly to identify the company needs and requests.

We will list a few basic skills below, just to show you what the section might look like, but we strongly urge you to add specific work related skills.

Part-time work experience

It is not unusual to apply for part-time work while in university or even High School, and this could mean that you have limited work experience. Someone with a long career could easily pick out relevant work experience for a part-time job resume, but what to do if you are inexperienced?

In a case like this, you will usually list any work experience you have, even if completely unrelated to the job you seek. You can also include summer jobs you have had, volunteer experience or perhaps even if you have helped out with your parent’s work or helped out a friend.

When writing the work experience section for a part-time job resume, you have to be ready to be creative, if you lack relevant experience. 

This does not mean you should be dishonest, but that you should try and be creative in how you list your actual experience.

Processed memberships and purchases, dealt with issues and complaints, provided customers with top expertise, communicated with store- and regional managers and received product deliveries.  

  • Increased sales with 28% by providing each client with personalized service to boost return business.
  • Assisted the manager with staff training and capacitation.
  • Successfully closed the company’s biggest business deal in the past 10 years.
  • Surpassed the annual metric reviews with above average qualifications.

Cashier, 2000 – 2009

Worked at the register, received customers, used a computer system to register orders, assisted in the kitchen, kept the restaurant clean and closed the store at night.

  • Volunteered to take on the early, late and weekend shifts that were otherwise difficult to fill.
  • Received recognition for excellent ability to multitask.
  • Saved a woman’s life with the heimlich maneuver.
  • Learned the traits of the kitchen by helping out when the restaurant was understaffed. 

Part-time job education

The education needed for a part-time job depends on the job, but entry-level part-time jobs tend to only require a High School diploma. If you are currently studying, list the degree, but make it clear that you have not graduated yet.

The job post should hold all the information you need regarding any educational requirements, and you should only list your High School degree or GED if you do not have a higher degree to list.

We wanted to get a better idea of what a part-time worker needed to have in terms of education, which was why we sampled real job posts. Our findings were somewhat inconclusive, due to how many different kinds of part-time jobs there are.

A part-time job as a forklift driver does not have the same educational requirements as a part-time job as a psychiatrist, obviously, so it is up to you to make sure you are qualified for your dream job.

Adding courses to your resume is great when you lack work experience, but you should make sure to only add courses that are directly relevant to the job you are pursuing. 

Few of the part-time resumes we surveyed for this article included courses, but we still want to recommend adding them if you have taken a course or two you would deem relevant.

Examples could be to add a food handling course if you are applying for a job in the restaurant business, a language course for customer service jobs, courses in navigation for driving jobs and so on.

This section is not mandatory in a resume, and many choose not to include it, so it is simply up to you whether you feel you have taken courses that are relevant enough.

Are you looking for an entry-level part-time job or a more advanced level job? This will have a direct impact on whether you need certification prior to being hired. Do your research and pay special attention to the work post.

There are a few certifications that could always be listed on a resume, such as a driver’s license, language proficiency certifications or a CPR & First-Aid certification.

There are professions that require certifications, like medical professions, teaching and driving jobs, but there are also many jobs (and especially part-time jobs) that will train and have you certified once hired.

If you do not have relevant certifications to list, we recommend that you omit this whole section to keep your part-time job resume looking clean and organized.
