A good housekeeper will have strong attention to detail and will be obsessive about cleanliness.
Technological skills are becoming increasingly important as hotels and other establishments and buildings move towards monitoring rooms with computers.
Numerical ability and social perceptiveness are important too.
As a team leader, a housekeeping supervisor needs to be able to monitor the performance of others. This in itself takes personal strength and the ability to accept criticism.
Supervisors train new housekeeping staff in line with accepted standards and the policy of the employer. Disciplining staff will also be part of the normal routine.

Housekeeping supervisors work alongside the more senior housekeeping manager to keep hotels, motels, guest houses, and other buildings clean and make sure that all the quality standards are up to scratch.
It’s a kind of jack-of-all-trades job, but with management responsibilities.

Housekeeping supervisor education
Traditionally, people in the housekeeping industry worked their way up the ladder and it was possible to become an executive housekeeper based on experience rather than education.
Although it is still possible, it’s not that easy, and graduates of hotel administration programs have the inside track for management positions.
For example, if you want to get a housekeeping supervisor job in a large hotel chain, or hospitals, nursing homes, and schools, you will need experience as well as a specific set of skills for the job that is learned.
And it doesn’t stop there, particularly if you opt for a supervisory job with a big company like Holiday Inn.
With additional education and lots more experience, the potential career path from a housekeeping supervisor or executive housekeeper can lead to positions like a front office manager, an assistant general manager, or even a general manager.
We scanned dozens of job posts and noted that while most positions require a high school diploma, a small percentage call for a bachelor’s degree.
An undergraduate bachelor’s degree in hotel or hospitality management will provide a good foundation of knowledge and ensure a higher wage. Another option is to get a diploma in housekeeping.

There are various online and onsite courses that teach hotel cleaning and housekeeping management, some of which result in a certificate.
Some universities and colleges offer courses, often as part of continuing education for the industry.
For example, the Mississippi State University Extension Center for Continuing Education has a six-month executive housekeeper course that they describe as “advanced career training.” It also results in a certificate.
Students are taught the management skills needed to supervise other staff members and organize housekeeping teams. They learn hiring and management practices and focus on working with team members and how to handle interpersonal issues.
Advanced skills and knowledge taught range from laundry service and organizational systems to event planning and formal table service.
The International Executive Housekeepers Association (IEHA), a non-profit organization that enables facility managers to maintain healthier, safer, and cleaner buildings, offers certification (see below) and continuing education opportunities.
Topics offered by the IEHA and other professional organizations include customer service, budgeting, linen handling, workplace safety, and green buildings.
P&G Professional University offers free educational content on its website to members and certified professionals wanting continuing education. They participate in programs that are offered by various industry organizations including the IEHA and the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI).

Even though you can work as a housekeeping supervisor without any formal education other than a high school diploma, it is possible to be certified.
This is a step that will increase your prestige and your income and is worth looking at even if the job doesn’t demand it.
Certification is offered by the IEHA, which caters to people, like executive housekeepers, who are employed in facility housekeeping at a management level. And it offers certification in the form of a Registered or Certified Environmental Services Executive (RESE or CESE) to members and non-members of the Association.
Candidates are required to supply a copy of their high school diploma or equivalent GED. With this level of education, or with an associate’s degree, they require candidates to complete a Frontline Program before entering the Professional Education Credentialing Program (PECP).
You need a bachelor’s degree to become a REHE.
According to the IEHA, the PECP course teaches strategies for effective communication and management, as well as the science of cleaning.
Certification must be renewed every two years.
The National Restaurant Association offers a Certified Hospitality Housekeeping Executive (CHHE) certification that recognizes professional skills.

When you apply for a position make sure you have the education and/or the experience called for. Tailor your resume for the job, highlighting skills that are required in the position you want.
- Housekeeping supervisors usually need at least a high school or equivalent diploma, but if you are more ambitious you might have studied for a degree. Even if you don’t have a degree, you can become certified, which will improve your job prospects.
- The skills and abilities required to be a housekeeping supervisor or executive housekeeper are varied. When you showcase these on your resume, make sure that they are in keeping with what the job requires. Don’t be tempted to claim you have skills that you don’t have, but don’t add a whole lot of information that isn’t relevant to your application.
- It is always an advantage if you can show you have had substantial relevant experience in the industry. Even if you have had jobs in more junior housekeeping positions, list these to your advantage.
