Computer engineers along with cybersecurity and electrical engineers are rated amongst the most in-demand professionals in the US and globally.

The career outlook for the profession is excellent and the pay is great.

But if you are in the market for a new job as a computer engineer you’re going to have to sell yourself because there are lots of professional engineers out there who excel in the field.

How? With a great resume that we’re going to help you to write.

Resume objective for a computer engineer

You might be a genius at writing code and solving computer software or hardware problems, but these super-smart skills aren’t going to help you write a compelling computer engineer resume.

One way to make your resume shine is to include a great objective or professional summary at the top of the document.

Resume objectives have got bad press in recent years, largely because they traditionally regurgitated what was specified in the job description.

While you should use this information to craft an objective, you need to show, not only that you have what they want, but how you will bring value to the position.

Of course, you need to focus on the skills you have, but, because recruiters commonly use applicant tracking systems to sort resumes, there are keywords that will help make yours stand out.

According to Monster’s career advice, keywords that will stand out whether humans or bots are evaluating resumes may signal personal traits that identify your accomplishments and ethics. They include experienced, trained, achieved, managed, and improved.

Keywords that indicate experience rather than skill sets are also powerful. They include expert, specialist, coach, mentor, trainer, enthusiast, and passionate.

Sample Objective

Expert computer engineer with four years of experience. Strong soft and hard skills and a passion for mentorship. Looking to use engineering and hardware experience to develop innovative technological solutions. Enthusiastic, quick thinker with an ability to think out of the box.

Resume skills for  a computer engineer

You’re a computer engineer so you know what skills are required for the job. But the skills you share on your resume will ultimately be determined by the job you are applying for.

They will also vary depending on whether you are a computer software or hardware engineer.

According to the Cullen College of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Houston, all scientists and engineers must have a firm foundation in math and science.

Regardless of whether they specialize in hardware or software, computer engineers need very strong technical skills. But soft skills are also important. These include verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, as well as an ability to work in a team. Time management is also critical.

Critical-thinking skills enable computer engineers to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different solutions. They also enable them to think logically and to clarify goals.

Software developers cannot do their jobs without entrenched programming and coding skills, and they need to be able to code in multiple computer languages including C++, HTML, Python, SQL, and JavaScript.

When you highlight your skills, make sure they meet the requirements of the job description.

Sample Skills

Programming and coding | Critical thinking | Problem-solving | Time management | Written and verbal communication | Technically creative | Mobile and cloud solutions

Computer engineer work experience

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were more than 71,100 jobs held by computer hardware engineers in 2019. At the same time, there were more than double the number (1,469,200) software developer jobs open to computer software engineers or computer scientists.

This indicates that there are considerably more jobs available to software engineers. Additionally, the job outlook for hardware engineers for the decade to 2029 is only 2%, while the outlook for those specializing in software is 22%, which is much higher than average.

The medium pay for hardware engineers is higher than for software engineers – $117,220 versus $107,510 per year.

These statistics warn that although the monetary rewards will generally be higher, it is likely to be more of a challenge for hardware engineers to get jobs.

We scoured job postings for computer engineers and noticed that many of them require many years of experience in specified fields. You will need to show that you have both the experience that meets the job requirements as well as the timeframe called for.

Whichever direction you have chosen to follow, it’s important to add relevant work experience to your resume to show that you are not only qualified for the job but that you have the proven ability to succeed.

Your resume is your key to getting an interview!

Computer engineer education

Because computers are built from electronic circuits, electrical and computer engineering are closely related.

According to Iowa State University’s College of Engineering, computer engineers solve problems in hardware and software systems and networks for anything from laptops to airplanes.

Their function ranges from improving internet security to implementing sensor networks to make robots more like humans.

Electrical engineers function at the foundation of all electronic devices from laptops to solar energy systems. They also design computer circuits.

But many jobs are offered to either electrical or computer engineers either with a bachelor’s or a master’s degree.

Similarly, there is an overlap between computer engineering and computer science degrees.

While computer engineering and electrical engineering are usually offered by the same university department, computer science is more commonly found in different university departments. This is because they are quite different, with computer scientists being involved with software and engineers focused on hardware.

However, there are computer engineering jobs available for graduates of either a Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree.

The important factor will be that you had the relevant education for previous jobs and this education qualifies you for the new job you are applying for.

Numerous courses are available for computer engineering and related topics. But if you have a degree, particularly a master’s degree in computer engineering, it is unlikely you will need additional courses.

In some instances, computer engineers might want to change direction, for example, focus more on software than hardware, or vice versa. Then short courses may be beneficial.

Two websites that offer comprehensive information about computer engineering and related courses are Edx and Coursera. They also list some degree programs.

Both also state where courses are available from all institutions all over the world (both on site and online), and which ones offer certificates for courses – which always looks good on a resume.

Sample Courses

  • C Programming with Linux
  • Circuits and Electronics
  • Programming & Data Structures
  • Computer Science for Game Development
  • MATLAB Programming for Engineers and Scientists

Even though not many employers require computer engineers to be certified, there are voluntary certifications that may improve your job prospects.

The Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP) offers certification to its members in the form of Certified Computing Professional (CCP). They must have a computer-related degree and at least two years of experience.

Candidates have to pass an examination that covers general knowledge and two specialty areas or one specialty area and two computer programming languages.

Self-study, online, or tutor-led options are offered, and official examination guides are provided.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society offers certification to computer software engineers.

There are three options:

  1. Associate Software Developer (ASD) for those with a fairly basic knowledge
  2. Professional Software Developer (PSD) that acknowledges proficiency in four key areas, software engineering, design, construction, and testing
  3. Professional Software Engineering Master (SEM) that showcases proficiency in 12 key knowledge areas. This certification required at least four years of college education (a computer engineering degree for example) as well as at least four years of relevant industry experience.

Tips from Experts

“Computer engineers are the binary bosses who dream up new computer hardware, software, and systems, making yesterday’s science fiction today’s fact. Without them, our computerized window on the world would be a vacant screen.” – Roger Moncarz, economist in the BLS Office of Employment Projection

“If you are closer to school, with little work experience, the focus of your resume will be primarily on your education and on your projects. The more you progress in your career, the less these things become important, and the more you want to highlight your work experience. Even beyond that, the more you progress in your career after that, the less some details become relevant.“ – Clement Mihailescu, Google software engineer

“To write a strong technical, engineering resume, customize it, focus on your accomplishments and not your job duties, be brief and to the point, and make sure it reflects you at your personal best. Your intro/summary is basically your first impression. Your skills are really important. When you write your job history you must tailor your resume to the opportunity. Write a short summary followed by bullet points that highlight your achievements. Include problem-solving and how you went about it.” – Danielle Chitty, recruiter
