Working in child care is not for the faint of heart! You are likely to be peed on, thrown up on, hit, have paint in your hair, and wiped a dozen snotty noses all before noon; I know because it’s happened to me. But contrary to much of the popular belief out there, child care is not babysitting.  

Working effectively in child care requires education, certifications, and a well-rounded knowledge of child development and psychology. Child care is teaching.

If you are just starting out, have no fear. Experience with summer camp, babysitting, nannying, or any other work with children will help you in this field.  

However, if you are looking to secure a job and make it a career, the more you know about teaching and education, the better your chances of securing a job. Your resume needs to highlight all your experience with children and any high school, college, or community classes or certifications related to children you have earned.    

Resume objective for child care providers

When writing a resume for a childcare position, you will want to highlight any related skills you have that will help children grow and develop.  An individual who can showcase their understanding that working with children requires patience, love, and an understanding of child development and needs will rise to the top of the applicant pool.

Sample Objective

Loving and patient child care worker with four years of experience working with young children in a summer camp program seeks a full-time position as a child care educator. A solid understanding of the six main developmental areas of children as well as strong classroom management skills, experience communicating with parents, and the ability to work well on a team and work under pressure.     

Resume skills for child care providers

In addition to your educational skills, child care centers want to know what you have to offer to their school. Most child care centers teach from the holistic approach, meaning the development of the whole child, and will have curriculums that include areas such as art, music, science, physical education, math, and literacy. 

This is your opportunity to brag about being a story-time reader at the local library, or a choir director at your place of worship.

Child Care work experience

Believe it or not, this is not always the most critical section on a child care resume; that is, many people switch to child care later in life, or they start very young and do not have much experience in the field.

That being said, you need to include previous work experience for the last several years, even if it is not child-related or something unofficial such as babysitting or working in the church nursery room. Any non-child care experience you have may still highlight many of the attributes centers are searching for, so go ahead and brag!

Child Care education

Child care education is available at many levels. The most basic certification is the 90 Clock Hour Certification, which consists of two 45-hour certificates.  The first is in Child Growth and Development, and the second is specialized for either Infant/Toddler or Preschool.

The next level is the Child Development Associate Certification or the CDA. CDA courses prepare you for a career in early childhood and require 120 clock hours of training, a written essay, a portfolio, and an in-class observation by a state-certified official.

Many individuals roll their CDA into an associate’s degree and or a bachelor’s degree. Advanced degrees also exist, and many universities that offer a bachelor’s program also offer master’s degree programs in early childhood.

There are also sites such as NAEYC and CCEI that offer individual courses for continuing education hours through a membership option.

One of the best-known sites for taking courses in early childhood education is the ChildCare Education Institue of CCEI. They offer courses on a wide range of topics for child care workers. Additionally, your local community college or library may host non-credit classes to advance your skills. If you are relatively new to the field, it may benefit you to take a few courses to boost your resume.  

This is another spot to let your special interests shine! Childcare centers are not only looking for individuals with education and child experience, but they also want well-rounded individuals who can bring something unique to their school.

One certification child care centers will love to see is that you are CPR/First Aid Certified. Additionally, any certifications you have relating to health, safety, or food preparation will catch their eye.  

Child care workers are often chameleons, so if you have a food handling certificate from your time working at Starbucks or CPR training from the summer camp job, make sure it is included.

Lastly, let’s take a look at a posting for a child care teaching position. As with most fields and positions, there are varying levels. When looking for a job in early childhood, you may need to tailor your search based on your experience. 

You may consider searching under different titles, including Aide, Teacher Aide, Assistant Teacher, teacher, or lead teacher.

Taking a look at this job post shows us that this school is looking for someone caring, positive, and loving towards children. Another highlight is the emphasis on safety and health protocol.  Health and Safety have always been a major concern of child care centers, and with the recent COVID crisis and fears among parents, it is going to be even more of a focus.  

Their ideal candidate has completed their 90-hour certification. If you are in the process of earning your 90 hours or have completed one of the 45-hour modules, it is still recommended that you apply. 

Quality child-care workers can be hard to come by, particularly at certain times of the year, such as the beginning and end of school years, when many ECE workers switch to public or private PK-6 positions.
