Resume objective for bakers

The resume objective is to resumes what the garnish is to a cake, and it is the first thing a hiring manager looks at before moving on to the rest. 

Picture a little bakery with two cakes on display. One is delicious, but it doesn’t look very good, and the other looks incredible. Which cake is the client the most likely to choose? The great-looking cake, probably. Think of your resume objective as the cake decoration – the first impression. 

Remember the “flavor” we mentioned? This is where to add it. Show off your personality along with your experience. If you have specific training or a field of interest – bring it up, and embellish it with words that let the hiring manager know how reliable, creative, and dedicated you are.

Resume skills for bakers

There are many hard and soft skills worth mentioning on your resume when you are a baker, to show that you have the right skills, personality, and mindset. 

The first skill you should mention is baking, and you can follow it up by being a little more specific. You can bring up if you normally bake from scratch, are used to baking machines, industrial ovens, have pastry chef experience, bake cakes, bread, have a dessert chef background, or anything else you believe to be relevant.

Safety management skills, proper sanitation procedures, customer service experience, and cashier training could also be relevant, depending on the job. You should make sure to adapt your resume depending on what they ask for in the job post.

As for soft skills, you want to show the hiring manager that you are creative, driven, able to handle fast-paced work and pressure, a multitasker, and someone who works well together with a team. 

If you successfully combine soft and hard skills in this section, it will set the tone just right for the rest of your CV, and keep the hiring manager interested.

Baker work experience

Perhaps you have already worked in multiple places and gained impressive work experience, or maybe you are just starting  – it doesn’t matter, and the most important thing is that you single out what is relevant. What have you done in the past that is relevant to a baker’s position?

Good past work experience is having worked at a bakery, of course, and restaurant experience, customer service experience, catering, and any job where you worked with customers or something creative.

Hiring managers need to know if you understand the industry, and it will help them figure out how much training you will need. Be specific about what type of work you did at each job, and try to angle it towards baking.

Baker education

It is prevalent for bakers to have attended culinary school or have a background in food-related academics, but it is not a requirement when working as a baker. 

In the United States, there are no educational requirements for bakers at all, which means you can theoretically decide to become a baker one day. However, will someone hire you without relevant, documented baking skills? Hiring managers will look at your educational achievements, so don’t rely too much on the fact that you don’t need to have gone to culinary school. 

Use this section to add your academic achievements and college or university degrees, and if they are not food-related, consider compensating with courses and certifications in their respective sections.

In this section, you can list important courses that were part of your university education, or list additional courses you have taken, either related to baking, customer service, food safety, business, and more. A hiring manager wants to see your experience in the food industry and as a baker, and this is a good place to show off your expertise.

If you have not taken any relevant courses – skip this section. Listing your driver’s license course is unlikely to get you closer to being hired as a baker unless you drive and deliver baked goods!

Certifications

Adding certifications to your resume isn’t something you have to do, and few from all bakers are certified. It is, however, a great way to show your future employer how dedicated you are to the trade, and that you are always seeking to improve and expand your knowledge.

Suitable certifications to list are those proving a skill, such as a pastry chef certification. Getting certified is an even better idea if you didn’t study culinary arts or similar at university or lack work experience. 

There are multiple certification programs for bakers available online, or you can find them at your local university or specialized baking institutes.
